ADVANCED BUDDHIST STUDIES
an online course with Lodro Rinzler
October 22nd - November 19th 7:45 - 9:00 pm EST
Five weeks. Four lines. An entire Buddhist path.
Gampopa, the great 12th-century Tibetan Buddhist master, distilled the journey of awakening into four deceptively simple instructions:
Grant your blessings so that my mind may be one with the dharma.
Grant your blessings so that dharma may progress along the path.
Grant your blessings so that the path may clarify confusion.
Grant your blessings so that confusion may dawn as wisdom.
These teachings, known as The Four Dharmas of Gampopa, offer a remarkably concise map for moving from being interested in Buddhism to actually allowing the teachings to transform how we live.
Over five weeks, we’ll take our time with these four lines, exploring what they meant in Gampopa’s tradition and, perhaps more importantly, what they mean for those of us trying to practice in the midst of modern life.
We’ll explore questions like: What does it actually mean for our mind to “follow the Dharma?” How do we move beyond treating meditation as one more self-improvement project? What do Buddhist teachings mean when they talk about confusion - and how might the very things that trip us up become part of the path? And what would it mean for our ordinary life, exactly as it is, to become fertile ground for awakening?
About the Course
Each 75-minute live online session will include traditional Buddhist teachings, meditation practice, contemporary application, and time for questions and small group discussion.
The Book: We will move through Traleg Rinpoche’s commentary on this verse together, chapter by chapter, which can be found here.
While this is part of Lodro’s Advanced Buddhist Studies series, you do not need an advanced degree in Buddhism - or even years of practice - to participate. You simply need familiarity with meditation and a sincere curiosity about going deeper into the Buddhist path.
All sessions will be recorded, so if you miss a class - or want to revisit these teachings - you can watch at your own pace.
The Four Dharmas have been studied and practiced for centuries because they point to something timeless: how we move from knowing about the dharma to actually becoming transformed by it.
Join me for five weeks of going deep into these four extraordinary lines.

In his teaching, Lodro consistently provides the perfect mix of traditional wisdom and contemporary experience, showing that what we think are our oh-so-modern problems are really pretty much the same as the ones humans have always been encountering.”
